Chapter 11

On Saturday morning, inspired by the unseasonably warm temperature, Connie woke up early to go for a quick paddle along the coastline. Her kayaking expedition last Sunday had her thinking about getting back out onto the water all week, so she decided to seize the day. Or at least the morning. She took her paddleboard out of her storage closet in the garage, loaded it onto the carrier, and wheeled it to the beach. After a thirty minute paddle, she sat on her board, allowing the morning sun to shine on her face and the gentle waves to push her into shore. Then she headed upstairs for a shower.

On her way to Just Jewelry, Connie dropped off the trash bags filled with Sally’s clothing at the donation center of her church’s thrift shop and arrived just in time to open the store with Grace at 9:00. Connie was glad that she had taken some time to herself, because she barely had a chance to take a break all day.

The following week was uneventful. As usual, Connie spent every day at the store, taking advantage of the mornings when Grace was working to get back into a regular workout routine, either outdoors or in the gym at Palm Paradise. When Grace or Abby were in the store, Connie managed to find a few chunks of time to take stock of her inventory and place another order with her Fair Trade artisans. Connie still had plenty of pieces that she created in the storage room, so she didn’t have to worry about replenishing her stock quite yet, but she ordered some beads and other supplies to have on hand for when she was able to devote some time to jewelry-making.

Around dinnertime on Friday, just as things started to slow down, Connie’s phone pinged. It was a group text from Ruby to Connie and Grace. Amy was in a car accident and is at the Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers. I think someone might have tried to hurt her.

Next came a message from Grace. I’m running some errands in the area. I’ll be right there.

Since Abby had things under control in the shop, Connie decided to drop Ginger off at home and head over for moral support.

Within a half hour, all three women were at Amy’s bedside in the emergency room. Amy didn’t appear to have any serious injuries, but she was shaken up.

“Tell us what happened,” Connie said.

“It was dark, and I was heading home after running some errands when I noticed a car in my rearview mirror that seemed to be following me. At first, I told myself I was letting my imagination get the best of me. I made a few turns to try to lose the car, but every time I turned, it stayed on my tail. I decided it would be safer to go back toward a main road, but the driver got more aggressive. He or she tapped my rear bumper with the front of their car, and that’s when I really started to panic.
